Skylark Ranch's Horseback Riding Program

Skylark Ranch offers quality riding school instruction in a summer camp setting! Our program features beginning to advanced lessons in both English and Western riding styles. Emphasis in all program levels is on skill development, progression, and expanding knowledge of horses and horse care. Campers receive a riding assessment on the first day of camp and are placed in riding classes based on their skill level.

Campers of all levels:

  • Have daily riding lessons (unless otherwise noted)
  • Participate in theory lessons
  • Take part in horse care and management
  • Receive a written evaluation of their skills throughout the session and a ribbon of completion

Choosing a Riding Style

Western Style (W)

From reining to rodeos, Western Equitation is a thrilling way to experience horseback riding. Participate in lessons at the arena or set off on fantastic trail rides… hop in the saddle and become a cowgirl today! Developed for long days on the trail and working with cattle, Western riding is a popular discipline in the United States.

English Style (E)

Are you a hunter or a jumper? From ground poles to jumping over fences, gain skills in this traditional riding discipline. Practice proper balance and form through Hunt Seat Equitation and even ride through the countryside. Developed over from traditional military style riding, English riding can be seen all over the world—even in the Olympics!

Level of Instruction

Although campers will sign up for either English or Western style riding, they will be placed in a riding group based on an assessment during their first day at camp. Riding groups may have campers in different age groups and living units, because they will be assigned according to skill level. Riding groups have no more than 6 campers. Regardless of riding group, campers will spend the rest of their day with and sleep according to age group.
